Circulation Day in the Otaku Culture is celebrated on the 10th of August.
It originated as a Tough Otaku Day of Honesty that recognizes love
communication in some of the hardest discussions to bring up,
including: relationship reciprocation, relationship preferences, and loves
desire needs. It has been celebrated culturally by those who were fans of
the show "Bakemonogatari" and Kana Hanazawa's song "Renai
Circulation" where the days name derives itself from. The day is
sometimes called "Renai Circulation Day, Circulation Day, and Falling in
Love Again Day".
Traditions
The ones who look forward to Renai Circulation day the most are Otaku who believe in a relationship you work
for. This message is common in many slice of life anime manga stories with love letters, but in the case of this
particular day it is for the exchange of heart felt letters have a message of critique and honesty. These letters
contain honest truths, multiple suggestions, and how to improve social unity for a mutual viewpoint on friendship.
For those that mutually feel they have a equilibrium already at its peak, tend to write all the honest truths of why
they enjoy the others company and what's mutually liked in their friend relationship.
Celebratory Foods
Renai Circulation day is also an occasion for giving gifts of food and/or accessories. On this private occasion there are food traditions as well. The ritual is
the reflection of the couples wish to always stay connected as they do their best to meet each others wishes no matter how difficult it may be is to serve
the other before serving themselves. Foods that commonly seen are mizudako octopus, sweet tamago, pink sushi rice, ohagi, and mochi.
Honesty Letter Ceremony
Friends into Otaku culture participate in the Honesty Letter Ceremony to communicate their feelings so that actions can be taken to strengthen the
relationship between two people. The actions and discussions speak as a reflection of the couples wish to always stay connected as they do their best to
meet each others wishes no matter how difficult it may be to read a mutual love. The color of the envelope used can imply love if it is pink or for people
seen as really close friends if the letter is purple.
History of Circulation Day - "Monogatari and Light Novels"
Using direction of cinema techniques of french new wave was the series trying to push different angles of cinema exploration by experimenting
contrasting nuances, which were the ideas that had set circulation day in motion. The otaku light novel genre fans have taken notice to the stories sense
of showing self indulgence and respecting the audience as is typical of light novels, so to identify with the ideas it was packaged as the term circulation
and named after one of the opening songs "Renai Circulation" and used as a way to celebrate the message of the show through "Circulation Day". The
day that was chosen was the start of the light novels original run of the 10th of August.
Honesty Letters in Circulation
Circulation in its term is to meet at the beginning from the end and in the case of otaku it was already covered in a beginners pleasure through the
concept of "renai circulation" and looked upon for a veterans harshness to bring people to the end of the circle. This contrast was presented in the
realm of pleasures of fantasy to the harshness of reality, where real world is the end with the visions of being full risky actions, unforeseeable setbacks,
and lasting consequences. This makes people have a need to look at themselves to acknowledge existence, embrace honesties ugly truths, personal
fantasy selfishness, and engaging to make things more preferable. Which made "Circulation Day" a day of self honesty of what direction of life the
person would like to take in their pleasure and harshness in a written letter placed inside a purple envelope and read to oneself aloud the following day.
Ideas of out of control lust may come to mind through ideals of pleasure, but otaku ethics lean on Japans ideas of focusing on duty and restraint until
both parties mutually agree on readiness of any sort or levels of interaction. As it is severely inappropriate to openly discuss in public the privates or
honest natural body and intercourse the topics are saved for a place of privacy. In the case of otaku it had started through honesty letters which allowed
for more than just personal development, but relationship development through a mutual equilibrium and signified by a different color envelope than
its predecessor. This relationship envelope was pink with a heart either drawn or placed as a sticker to be only for its partner to read its intimate
contents of honest harsh truths to push a long lasting relationship.
Origins in Octopus Tentacles
There was no connection of romantic connotations in messages of honesty letters and releasing secrets of most desired ideas, despite many peoples
interest in the day focusing on the sub-themes it is unsure the exact way love intertwined into the cultural celebration. Some who have looked at
Hokusai Katsushika's famous wood block painting "The Dreams of the Fishermans Wife" have made some comparisons about the ideas of love, desire,
and fertility that have become less talked about, but also synonymous with "Circulation Day" in its practice.
Circulation Day became more associated with love at all its levels and stages, but none more than its connection of the people on an intimate level. By
looking at things in mind and body perspective it made people draw out more of their own depictions from the Monogatari series and its explorations
on sexuality through the character Araragi Koyomi. It is done by exploring the many biological differences of what is attractive, the series delves into
outfits and utilizes where the camera angle is pointed, and a myriad of fetishes of actions with specific outfits and personality types which trigger
personal desire.
The celebrations began with the honesty letters representing the harshness of reality that would be discussed over food. Usually for a hang out or a
date of some sort the person, couple, or group would head out to get some food and purchase some bite sized appetizers or snacks for a showing at a
home. This would be a mutual favorite genre of anime or if following the theme of love a show of romance with foods like ohagi, sweet tamago, grilled
octopus with takoyaki sauce, and/or pink sushi rice balls to represent the ending of the circle to be at the beginning of a persons pleasure.
