Darth Maul is the Sith apprentice of the legendary Darth Sidious, and he is anxious to test out his skills against a Jedi. That's what he was born for: to slay Jedi. When Maul finds his opportunity, he has to go against the wishes of his master - and get revenge.
This book is interesting because it shows Maul when he was Sidious' Sith apprentice - before the Phantom Menace. This is not as good as Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir because there are less familliar characters and I can't make that much of a connection. I mean, there's Maul, of course, and also Aurra Sing and Cad Bane (and a bit of Sidious), but it's just harder to connect because this happens before all of the Star Wars movies. But in all, this is a really good comic for knowing the backstory of this iconic villain.
Darth Maul has been captured by Darth Sidious and imprisoned by his former master on Stygeon Prime. He is soon rescued by his loyal followers, known as the Shadow Collective. After being defeated and captured so many times, is it really possible for Maul to rise up again and again? He certainly thinks so. He makes a plot with Mother Talzin to help her revieve herself and defeat Dooku, Grievous, and Sidious once and for all.
This is one of the best Star Wars comics, in my opinion. The reason? Darth Maul becomes a really interesting character because he actually cares about people. He actually cares about his mother, Mother Talzin, which you wouldn't expect. Maul becomes even more round in this because...I don't know, he has a family! This is just a really big revelation to me and I didn't expect it. This story is really good, and while it seems like it's Darth Maul's last stand, it's not, and this actually sort of sets the stage for his appearance in Star Wars: Rebels. In all, this is a really great comic that makes Maul even more interesting.
