Squirrelflight has been pulled into the Moonpool by Ashfur, the impostor who has been inhabiting Bramblestar's body. She has been taken to the Dark Forest, also known as the Place of No Stars. And it appears that ShadowClan's faithful medicine cat, Shadowsight, helped Ashfur escape. Rootspring is the only witness of this event...but will anyone believe him? Meanwhile, in ThunderClan, Bristlefrost doubts her loyalty when the Clan is practically falling apart with Bramblestar's and Squirellflight's abscenses. Everything is centered at the Moonpool, where Squirreflight and Ashfur were last seen. But if they have truly gone into the Dark Forest, who will be brave enough to venture there and rescue their missing ThunderClan leaders?
This is my favorite book of the whole Broken Code series, mostly because it makes so many connections to the older books - particularily the fact that the Dark Forest plays a prominent role in this book, and we really start to see Ashfur for who he really is - when he isn't impersonating Bramblestar or being held prisoner. Additionally, I feel a lot of build up towards Bristlefrost and Rootspring's choice to be mates or not, because they have realized that they are too loyal to their Clans to leave. The ending is something that we have been waiting for since Ashfur took control of ThunderClan, and while a lot of things are revealed, there are still many unanswered questions to be resolved in A Light in the Mist...
