The clinic will cover the various factors that must be considered when assembling a satisfactory program from three perspectives – musical integrity, the importance of a successful presentation from the band, and the enjoyment that the audience will take away from the performance. Problems that are out of the control of the music director (such as the selections that are brought forward by guest conductors or soloists) and those that the music director can control (such as performance order and pacing between items) will be discussed. Real life examples of programs that result from these considerations from the past few seasons of the Heart of Texas Concert Band will be used to demonstrate these strategies at work.

Dr. R. Mark Rogers
R. Mark Rogers, of San Antonio, Texas, is a renowned educator, composer, arranger and band director. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Conducing from the University of Texas, as well as Masters and Bachelors of Music Education degrees from Texas Tech University. He performs on bassoon and contrabassoon with six regional orchestras in his home state, and his works are widely represented in the catalogs of many music publishers. The acquisition of the venerable Edwin F. Kalmus music publishing company in 2020 afforded Dr. Rogers a unique opportunity to use his considerable skills in both the Southern Music and Kalmus catalogues.
Rogers’ wife, Sudie, plays clarinet in the Heart of Texas Concert Band. Mark and Sudie take great delight in their family: Lt. Commander Robert (US Navy), wife Kelly and their daughters, Brynn and Olivia; James, wife Alyssa and their children, Bradley, Hannah and Lizzie; and John, wife Kami, and their sons Ethan, Levi and Micah.
