From lyrical works inspired by traditional musical traditions to energetic pieces influenced by contemporary culture, these compositions offer fresh sounds that are accessible, educational, and playable by ensembles of all levels. They also provide a meaningful way to connect with students whose playlists already include K-pop, J-pop, anime, and Studio Ghibli soundtracks.
This session introduces outstanding yet underperformed concert band literature by composers from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, China, and beyond, giving your next concert something new and unexpected. Participants will discover repertoire that broadens cultural perspectives while engaging today's musicians. Attendees will leave with a curated repertoire list and strategies for introducing these exciting works into their own concert band programs.
Dr. Thomas Kloss
Dr. Thomas Kloss
Dr. Thomas Kloss serves as Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Rainbow Warrior Marching Band at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He also conducts the Symphonic Band and Fall Concert Band and teaches courses in music education, inspiring the next generation of music educators and performers.
Before joining the UH Bands faculty, Dr. Kloss was Coordinator of Music Education and Associate Director of Athletic Bands at Idaho State University. During his tenure, he earned multiple university honors, including Distinguished Service, Advisor of the Year, and Faculty of the Year. He also directed the ISU Civic Concert Band and served as co-director of the Pocatello Municipal Band, building strong connections between the university and the surrounding community through music.
Dr. Kloss earned bachelor's degrees in Music Education and Saxophone Performance from the University of Arizona before completing both his Master of Music and Ph.D. in Music Education at Arizona State University. While at ASU, he taught courses in instrumental pedagogy and music education research and was a member of the instructional staff for the renowned Sun Devil Marching Band, experiences that continue to shape his dynamic approach to teaching, conducting, and ensemble leadership.
