Group Scout Leaders Report

I would like to thank you all for coming today,

Here we are again another year has flown past and we are back to recognise the work done by all our leaders of the group, our parent helpers that without their effort and time this group wouldn’t be able to provide such a good program for your children.

But, and there will always be a but, we do need more parent helpers. We still need leaders or helpers for at least 2 of our sections, still looking for helpers in the Scout section and the Explorers, they could put on many more activities for the young people. But without this help they are limited.

We don’t ask for a lot, a few hours a week or every fortnight. Please see me afterwards for a chat if you are interested.

Since the last AGM we have had a change of leadership in Beavers, Helen Sellors decided to join another group and so we welcome the new team of Kelly Griffiths as Leader, Julia Manwaring, Angela King, Tim Roots Spencer Manwaring & Grant Baxter also I would like to thank the many parents that helped out and still do when we changed to a new day & time. Also we welcome Andrew Macmillan to the scout section.

From 25th May 2018 GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) come into effect that means that any data we hold on our young persons and you has parents we need your consent to hold it.

Duty of care for the security of data lies with everybody that gathers, handles or receives personal data. Our Scout Group, Executive Committee has overall responsibility for making sure that we comply with legal requirements, including data protection legislation. So if you need any more information please come and see us.

I would like to congratulate Spencer Manwaring and Emily Terris for achieving their Wood Beads for finishing their training, these where presented to them at St Georges day at the Leas Cliff Hall.

Also, would like to congratulate every Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer who this year achieved their chief scout awards, some of them presented this year at St Georges Parade; this is the highest Award in Scouting a young person can achieve.

We have a young explorer that will be doing a humanity trip to Ghana next year, Paul Brisley and he has raised the money with the help of his section and the group, thank you Mark Hardie for all your help you have given him with the Family Bingo and other activities throughout the year.

We also have been lucky enough to have two members and a Leader chosen to attend the next world Jamboree in the USA, Lily Hussey, George Lock & Ben Taylor. So lots of fundraising will be going on and I hope you will all support us to do this.

Our new project for the coming year is moving the Pole shed to the side of the hut. Tiding up the pathways and keeping the grounds safe. So, parents we need your help with work parties for a couple of weekends, any volunteers? (we will provide bacon and burger butties and loads of tea & coffee)

I would like to thank the Bingo committee, Mark Hardie, Louise Hardie and helpers for the great job they do in fundraising for us this year, without their hard work we wouldn’t have the money for the covering the Headquarters expenses.

We are trying to find other venues to do Boot Fairs but nothing yet. So, if you know of somewhere we could hold a boot fairs please let us know.

Finally thank you to all the parents for supporting the Group.

I would also like to thank the leadership and helpers for giving up their time to give your children a full and active program.

As you know we are always looking for volunteers who would like to join the Group, the Executive committee or help with the fundraising, new ideas are always welcome & the maintaining of the hut

Beaver Section Report

Beavers AGM Report 2017/18

We currently have 29 active beaver scouts with 2 starting to link with cubs next week. We have 8 on the waiting list but they won't be ready until December time...luckily that's around the same time when we have some ready for swimming up to cubs!!!

As I only took over the colony in September my report really starts from then... but its been action packed.. we have filled it with our first outing to the Beaver Ahoy! Which was a great success, we have made Poppies, taken them to school and town to collected money for the Royal British Legion. Attended both the Remembrance Sunday and St Georges Day Parades.

On our nights at the hut we have had some fun nights in over the winter months... we have had visits from the Guide Dogs, Port Lympne (where we found out a Beavers head will fit very nicely inside a lions jaw!!!), we enjoyed backwoods cooking and the joy of dough twists, a raucous night involving hundreds of potatoes in spud night and of course there was slime night!!! Still to come we have hikes, canoeing, the group swim in Ashford and of course a few are coming to Camporee.

All theses activities have led to our Beavers earning themselves a whopping load of badges..in total I have awarded 259..and 5 Bronze Chief Scout Awards...

Last but certainly not least, I would like to Thank the following people.. Julia, who does all the paperwork and makes sure all our activities get put into the right box and get turned into badges!! Andy, Grant, Vanessa, Tim, Kate, Jo, Angela and Spence. Then there are the three amigos.. that help ?? each week Sam, Marcus and Toby who although much taller are on the same wave length as the Beavers so can entertain them if we need a game pulling out the bag in a hurry. Without The help of this lot none of these activities would be possible and I for one am truly grateful... Thanks You Guys.

Cub Section Report

Akela’s Annual Report

2017 - 2018

We currently have 40 Cubs, all who seem to continue to enjoy being part of 1st Cheriton and take part in the many

exciting activities that we put together for them.

My sincere thanks go to this ever enthusiastic Cub Pack leadership team who give up massive amounts of their free

time each week and usually consists of:

· Matt Cowdroy Kaa (Python)

· John Wood Hathi (Elephant)

· Jonny Robinson Chil (Kite)

· Kelly Griffiths King Louie (Orangutan)

· Spencer Manwaring Bagheera (Black Panther)

· Emily Terris Morr (Peacock)

· Debbie Hill Baloo (Brown Bear)

Thanks very much to our Young Leaders, Jess & Ryan who are currently helping us with the Pack.

We welcome Stephen Robinson to the Cub Leadership Team and look forward to his input and help with making Cubs as much

fun as we can make it.

6r’s & 2ndr’s Camp this year was a big challenge and not only for the Cubs, but also for Spencer as he was in charge of the

planning and running of it and he was being assessed for his nights away permit by the County at the same time. The weather

was not particularly kind, but the Cubs took part in all the games and activities with great enthusiasm.

We are all loving the drier weather and lighter evenings, enabling us to spend as much time outside as possible while completing the badge work needed for Cubs to achieve their Silver Chief Scout award.

And the best event of the year is still to come, Pirate Summer Camp at Bushy Wood near Eastbourne. At the time of writing

this there are 28 Cubs coming and only 2 spaces left.

Finally thanks to Matt Dickenson who has agreed to stay on the exec committee as a Cub Parent representative. I could

still do with a second Cub parent to help with this so if you can spare a couple of hours 4 times a year please let me know.

Thanks for listening!

Explorer Section Report

Okay, well this time last year we had a strong unit of 12 Explorers. This year we have grown in numbers to 15. With hopefully 3 older scouts coming up in the next couple of months.

The enthusiasm that these young people have is fantastic. Sometimes even 2 and a half hours an evening isn’t merely enough for these explorers to enjoy.

Although the Section only has two leaders – Sue and myself – (and hopefully a third trying to make an appearance) we are grateful that the GSL and the other Section Leaders are willing to offer an extra pair of hands to help keep our programme of activities going.

In the past 12 months…we have attended Gilwell 24 which of course we are doing again this year!

We attended the Kent International Jamboree, where we spent a week joined with the scout section and over 2000 other scouters from all over the world in a fun packed camp.

We’ve been Bowling with the group, had Wide Games with the Scouts and District Explorers, Horse riding with the Scouts. Swimming and many more. We do manage to fit in some badge-work too, which we are currently doing the community impact badge with gets the Explorers helping the local community.

Next year is the World Scout Jamboree in America, where we are luckily enough to get one of our Explorers, George to be selected.

On a personal note I want to say a huge thank you to Sue. I couldn’t run Explorers without her help.

She helps to prepare and run the activities, keeps all the paperwork neat and tidy and keeps everything, including me, organised.

We would like to thank all the section leaders for their help and parents who have helped and supported the section over the last year and welcome any new help or support.

So, with the continued help from the other Section Leaders and GSL, I hope the next 12 months will be as great as the last.
