Group Scout Leaders Report

I would like to thank you all for coming today,

Here we are again another year has flown past and we are back to recognise the work done by all the leaders of the group,

our parent helpers that without their effort and time this group wouldn’t be able to provide such a good program for your children.

I will say I am very proud of being GSL for this group as we are very lucky to have hard working leadership who put in varied and interesting programs for our young people.

But, and there will always be a but, we do need more parent helpers. If you have read my letter in our new website we need leaders for at least 3 of our sections,

still looking for helpers at Beavers, Helen has a long list of children waiting to come into scouting but to be able to do this she need your help.

The scout section and the Explorer are the other sections that need adult help, they could put on many more activities for the young people.

But without this help they are limited.

We don’t ask for a lot, a few hours a week or every fortnight. Please see me afterwards for a chat if you are interested.

I would like to congratulate Kelly Griffiths for achieving her Wood beads for finishing her training, John Wood for 30 years in Scouting & Marina Bailey for

achieving her 20 years in Scouting; she was presented with this at St Georges day at the Leas Cliff Hall.

Also, would like to congratulate every Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer who this year achieved their chief scout awards , the highest Award in Scouting.

We have a young explorer that will be doing a humanity trip to Ghana next year, Paul Brisley and he needs to raise the money himself

with of course the help of his section and the group, so if you can help by supporting him in his ventures we would appreciate it.

Our new project for the coming year is new lighting outside. We have had a grant from KCC for it so we will start the work very soon.

We have had the electrics of the hut checked and we had the fire brigade came in to do their checks so we are completely compliance now.

The two pieces of fencing on the path have been done so now we are secure all around.

I would like to thank the boot fair committee, Derek Kedwell, Paul White, Stuart Bailey, Teresa Taylor and all explorers and helpers

for the great job they did in fundraising for us last year, without their hard work we wouldn’t have the money for the covering the

Headquarters expenses as this would be hard to find. It will harder this year as we have had to stop the boot fairs at Port Lympne.

They are trying to find other venues but nothing yet. So, if you know of somewhere we could hold a boot fairs please let us know.

Thank you also Mark Hardie, our chairman who has taken the mantel of fundraising with Family Bingo,

which have been a good success, a monthly Bingo, raffle and other things.

The monthly Bingo has become very popular with the local community due to the very generous prize money.

Finally thank you to all the parents for supporting the Group.

I would also like to thank the leadership and helpers for giving up their time to give your children a full and active program.

As you know we are always looking for volunteers who would like to join the Group, the Executive committee or help with the fundraising,

new ideas are always welcome & the maintaining of the hut

Beavers Scout Report

1st Cheriton Beaver Scout Annual Report 13th May 2017

We currently have 21 Beavers, 1 will be linking with the Cubs ready to join at the end of May. We have 15 on the waiting list, 5 of whom will be joining us in May. In the past year we took part in the Remembrance Day service in town, St Georges Day at the Leas Cliff Hall and the British Legion poppy appeal collecting donations in the Bouverie Square Shopping Centre. We have been working on finishing off badges that are close to being completed and on new badges including the Navigator badge, Gardening badge and the Health and Fitness badge. Our Beavers have attended a District Treasure Hunt at Brockhill Country Park and have a District picnic coming up. We had a couple of trips to Seapoint Canoe Centre for Bell Boating sessions and hope to do some more soon. We have had a trip to Pets at Home and a Lego night. Last Christmas our Beavers took part in a concert together with 2nd Sandgate Beavers for the parents. During the last school half term we went on a 3 day trip to Kingswood activity centre to take part in lots of exciting activities. Coming up we have an adventure day at Lower Grange Farm, the Big Night Out sleepover including the camp craft badge, a night exploring and lots of hikes. I would like to say a special thank you to Pip and Emma for all their help and support. Also a big thank you to Paul and Tom for their support as Young Leaders. I am looking forward very much to the next year’s events.

Akela’s Annual Report 2016 - 2017

Firstly thank you all for being part of the 1st Cheriton Scout Group.

We currently have 38 Cubs, all enjoying the challenging program provided by our dedicated team of leaders. We have completed oodles of Badge work and currently all of the Pack are on track, to achieve their Silver Chief Scout Award before they leave us to join the Scout Section.

My sincere thanks go to this ever enthusiastic Cub Pack leadership team which usually consists of:

 Matt Cowdroy Kaa (Python)  John Wood Hathi (Elephant)  Jonny Robinson Chil (Kite)  Kelly Griffiths King Louie (Orangutan)  Spencer Manwaring Bagheera (Black Panther)  Emily Terris Morr (Peacock)  Debbie Hill Baloo (Brown Bear)

Also thanks to the Leaders and Helpers of the other 1st Cheriton sections, who are more than willing to dive in and help when needed.

Thanks very much to our Young Leaders

 Tom Hall  Jack Cranson  Stephen Robinson We have already had 2 Cub Camps this year, which is for many – including myself, the best bit about Scouting.

We have been to Buckmore Park for Zombie Survival Camp, this years 6r’s & 2ndr’s Camp which was brilliant. The weather was kind and the Cubs attacked all the games and activities with great enthusiasm.

Next our Explorer Section planned & ran a Hobo Camp last weekend and this was enjoyed by the 20 Cubs who attended. All of them learning more about the plight of the homeless, then spending the night out in cardboard boxes and successfully completing stage 1 of their Community Impact badge. Thank you very much Explorers.

Now we are all looking forward to our International Summer Camp at Ross Wood near Canterbury.

Thanks also to Matt Dickenson who has agreed to sit on the exec committee as a Cub Parent representative. I could do with a second Cub parent to help with this so if you can spare a couple of hours 4 times a year please let me know.

Lastly and most importantly to my ever supportive & lovely Wife Tracie, who helps out when she can and listens to my whinging & moaning when things are not going quite to plan!

Explorer Section Report

May 2017

And last – but by no means least – the Explorer Report, and I’ll keep it short and sweet.

The Explorer Section continues to grow – we now have 12 members.

Although the Section only has two leaders – Sue and myself – we are grateful that the GSL and the other

Section Leaders are willing to offer an extra pair of hands to help keep our programme of activities going.

In the past 12 months we have attended Gilwell 24 – and will be doing so again this year –

we’ve attended camps with other Sections, we’ve cooked a Christmas dinner here at the hut,

been bowling, laser tag with the Scout section, and recently organized a

hobo sleepover with the cubs and many hiking activities. We do manage to fit in some badge-work too.

On a personal note I want to say a huge thank you to Sue. I couldn’t run Explorers without her help.

She helps prepare and run the activities, keeps all the paperwork, and keeps everything, including me, organized.

So, with the continued help from the other Section Leaders and GSL, I hope the next 12 months will be as great as the last.

Thank you Ben & Sue
