On the first day of pre- production i wanted to change my role as i thought set design didn't suit me and luckily I changed to camera as i love it a lot but of course we couldn't start filming just yet we had to get an idea and find out from an outsiders point of view what their thoughts were. as Nate was not in on the first day me and chloe did one of their jobs for them we constructed a set of questions for the survey this was to help the script writter and director on how to layout the plot lines. we asked questions on set, sound , and the idea of psychological drama and aswell some questions about the show like the characters name.
from these results we feed them to the group and they can adapt themselves to the targeted audience and from these results some of the ideas have been used or changed for example a lot of responses liked sad or horror genres of music but the sound people went with more of a vintage game sound sort of something you would hear at an arcade is how i would describe it it also gives me similar notes of the theme of stranger things. another thing that was changes was the name of the main character it was written it that it was a boy but when getting an actor we had to work with a girl so they changed it to the sisters name (mia from alph) i don't think the scriptwriter was very keen on the name alph but we did some research and alph means lonely so we thought it was very fitting for the current situation. a lot of the results for the name of alph was for it but it didn't last very long. and the directors decided to change it to alfie.
We watched 4 tv shows to give us some inspiration for our own : sherlock Holmes, Patrick Melrose, stranger things, better call Saul i think Patrick Melrose was the one that's mostly similar to out initial idea.
sherlock analysis
Sherlock is one of the top shows in the uk and has lots of uses of cinimatography for exemple, jump cuts , slow motion, match on action l-cuts and this is all in one scene (iou scence)
This is an extreame high angle of moriarty and as he whistles the camera swiftly changes to a low angle this a match on action of him foreshadowing sherlock's fall there is a lot of negative space around him which allows us as the audience to focus on the subject, but then still having the props in the back out of focus to fill that space. i really liked this angle as it captures the facial expression and part of their costume and it tells us as the audience what the characters like in this example styled hair - takes care of himself. suit - well presented
Throughout this scene it cuts back and forth between sherlock and moriarty this creates a rhythm effect this means that it keeps the scene flowing at a quick pace along with L-cuts . the sarcasm in this scene makes it less serious and more light hearted. Sherlock is presented as well kept with his hair and costume i think that him in black makes him look more superior to moriarty in the grey.
during this scene they use the 180 degree rule which is a common thing in conversation scenes this is to make sure that the actors stay on the same side as if u film from the other side it will flip the actors making it look like they have moved (as shown in the example)
here is what is called a rack focus or as commonly know as a shift in focus this is where something is in focus whether its behind or in front but the opposite is blurred then the camera moves to focus on another thing this can be in many different ways for example in the screenshot moriarty is in focus and the tea set isn't then the camera shifts ever so slightly to focus on sherlock pouring the tea
addle stone scene - sherlock
in this scene where he is looking for the kids they use on screen visuals to show him scanning around London on a map the editing makes it look like only him can see it then the words that float up give us as the audience a clue to what he is looking for for this example 'chocolate' is used and that guides him to the abandoned chocolate factory in Addlestone. i would have loved to see this in our show but i wasn't sure if the editors could do that i think if we had that in our production it would have made it feel like both vr and real world were combined in a way.
stranger things - season 4 ep 8
stranger this is well known for its sound effects as they have some difficult atmospheres to create for example a lot of this episode was filed in a lab so they would have to use lots of metal sounds and maybe some like technical ones
here is where 011 is attacking papa and when she throws him against the machine and the floor there is a lot of sounds of metal clattering around and obviously he isn't actually being thrown its done through the use of Foley and the Foley artists would have had to watch the scene over and over to match up the sound affect to what is happening on screen. whilst all of this is going on they layer this with ambience and si-fi music and when she heads to the door it gets louder and louder to create that dramatic feel i see something like this working in our show right at the end when she walks into the living room seeing both of them on the floor dead the it should stop and go to complete silence.
here the use of lighting is shown through harsh light means there is a clear shadow against a high key background we see 011 all dark and sinister with blood coming out of her eyes this effect with the light is to show us who is the bad guy but 011 isn't and the happy more angelic lighting is on papa this is a huge contrast as we know he is the evil one. the lighting gives it an uncomfortable presence
Patrick Melrose - season 1 ep 1 this show follows Todorov's narrative theory
this is the first time we are introduced to our character, we don't know for definite who it may be as it is showing us through body language. as the scene continues the camera pans up towards his face and we start to hear someone talking over the phone i really liked the slow pan and wanted to incorporate it into our own. we didn't do a big pan such as this it was a pan from the celling down but with a bit more pace on it.
following Todorov's theory he seems fine then he gets the phone call from someone who tells him about his death this then drives Patrick to grab a injection from the floor he contemplates do it yet he just sits there smiling and giggling this tells us straight way he most likely doesn't like his farther. and we don't know yet if the drugs are a one time thing or if he is addicted. in our show i think the director wanted our character to smoke but i don't know if it was needed as there was only one shot of her smoking this made me think back to this shot and wonder if he is addicted or not. after finding out the news he goes to new york where he farther died to maybe find that grief this shows us hes trying to mend his relationship with him.
later on in the episode he starts do feel drowsy and all limp this could be a sign of addiction and that he needs so form of drug. during this scene the camera is all shaky to give is the same feeling Patrick is as he stumbles on his words or falling to the floor. I really liked that style of cinematography as it makes us as the audience to have a sense of what he is feeling. when doing the story board there was a shot I wanted when she has been running and the turns off into an ally she's starts to heavily breathe and when filming this shot I wanted the camera to follow the breaths she takes
in this shot there is a voice over i think that this effect was used to show Patrick's thoughts and it makes it like has a bit insane as he responds to the voices but out loud in this shot the voices tell him ' everything is under control ' this takes us back to the Todorov theory where there was a disruption where he was fighting for some drugs or alcohol and now hes had that he attempts to repair the damage by having a drink or two he feels more himself this also adds on to his addiction maybe as well as drugs its alcohol too
black mirror - striking vipers
black mirror is a psychological thriller that explores the dark instincts in humanity that collide with the dystopian feel.
in this episode we see a game invite this is the downfall as he starts to get more and more sucked into the game this is the virtual side of things and the more he plays the less time he spends with his family this is what our show was intended on but in the opposite way she is all alone and seeks her family in the vr. the lighting in this show is very low key but practical light is used eg from the tv and his controller.
i like the idea of birds eye shots as it can definitely capture what emotion is happening as in this episode his expression is all straight as hes been sucked into the game but only his mind. we do so happen to use a birds eye shot just like this to capture our characters eyes as she scans the rooom
