We model action to inspire action.

What is SERVICE AS ACTION?

ACTION means learning by doing and experiencing.

IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

Service as action is therefore an action you take to make a positive difference for someone else and the environment.

Meaningful Service

Serving and engaging with other people makes the service activities meaningful.  In order for all to benefit, it is essential to identify a clear need.  An understanding of an underlying issue is required for the service to be meaningful and this will include some type of interaction and collaborative exchange for all involved.

Service for and with others

Service activities should evolve beyond doing for others to engaging with others in a shared commitment towards the common good. Meaningful service requires understanding of an underlying issue such as poverty, literacy or pollution, and authenticating the need for this service. Meaningful service includes interaction, such as building links with individuals or groups in the community (MYP: From principles into practice, p. 23).
