In Reception, we are developing our basic musical skills by engaging in games and songs that will help us explore our natural abilities and become familiar with the most important musical elements in an interactive and fun way:
- Pulse is explored through movement: walking as we sing, playing instruments to show the speed of a song.
- Pitch is explored through the use of songs that contain few notes within the pentatonic scale ( a scale with 5 sounds: Do, Re, Mi, So and La).
- Rhythm is explored through games of call and response (listen and copy) that also give us a good idea of form and musical structure.
- Notation is explored through the use of simple symbols that represent sound and duration and that young learners can understand and relate to.
- Expressive elements and creativity are explored through story telling and the experimentation with singing voices that express specific ideas and emotions.
During our classes we use a lot of songs and games. Ask your child what activities we usually do with these songs and the stories we make up to explore different emotional aspects and musical elements.
