PERINI - THE WARRIOR DANCE
PERINI - THE WARRIOR DANCE
Perini Sivatandavam is an ancient dance form that originated and prospered in Telangana during the time of the Kakatiya Dynasty. It is also known as the 'warrior dance' of Telangana as it was believed to be performed by the soldiers before going to war. The dance is dedicated to Lord Siva and performed to invoke 'prerana' or inspiration. It was revived by Nataraja Ramakrishna during the 1960's when the dance form was almost extinct. His revival and reconstruction culminated in his decade-long study of textual evidence related to dance and music. This documentary was shot during December 2021 and is an attempt to educate the audience about this lesser-known dance form. Me and my friends visited the Annamacharya Academy of Music and Dance to talk to Ms. Suneela Prakash who is one of the well known Andhranatyam and Perini gurus in Hyderabad. Although this documentary lacks extraordinary visual elements due to our lack of expertise in videography, it is a sincere attempt to bring more awareness to revival of long-last traditional art forms in the country.
