IMD has issued alerts for heat wave conditions and intense rainfall for different parts of the country
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that heatwave conditions are likely to continue in parts of Northwest, Central and adjoining East India till June 11, 2022. An orange alert has been issued for the heat wave in Uttar Pradesh for June 7, 2022.
The department has also predicted intense spells of rainfall to continue over Northeast India and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim for the next 5 days. It has issued an orange alert for Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from June 8 to June 11.
Thunderstorms and lightning have been predicted over the southern parts of the country. Heavy rain is likely to continue in parts of southern interior Karnataka and Kerala.
About 16 cities and towns in the country have been reporting temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. The temperature in Delhi is likely to hover around 44 to 46 degrees Celsius. After June 11, there might be some respite as a light drizzle of rain is expected.
India has been facing severe heatwaves since March. On April 1, IMD had said that this year’s March was the hottest in 122 years. Usually, heatwaves were common in India, especially in May and June.
The State of India’s Environment in figures 2022, published by Centre for Science and Environment, and Down to Earth noted that between March 11 and April 24 heatwave-like conditions prevailed in 16 states in India.
