NEO-PHD OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FOGGIA WINS THE V EDITION OF THE “GUARNIERI-MONTEL” AWARD  

Michela Palumbo, who recently concluded the Doctoral Program in "Innovation Management of Agri-food Systems of the Mediterranean Region" (Tutor: Prof. Giancarlo Colelli and Dr. Maria Cefola) was awarded the "Guarnieri-Montel Prize", an event which was carried out as part of the "5° Workshop sull’Innovazione nella Meccanica e nell’Impiantistica Applicata ai Biosistemi Agro-alimentari e Forestali”, an event dedicated to new PhDs in memory of Gian Luca Montel, a researcher at the beginning of a promising career in a brand new university in the South and Adriano Guarnieri, an established and recognized master of Agricultural Mechanics in one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world.

Michela’s thesis on “Computer vision system for non-destructive and contactless evaluation of quality traits in fresh rocket leaves (Diplotaxis tenuifolia L.)” was carried out within Project “SUS&LOW”.

Amodio presented some of the ongoing activity and results obtained with Project SUS&LOW with a poster presentation on “Assessing the performance of Hyperspectral Imaging and FT-NIR for prediction of internal constituents of tomatoes" within the NIR 2023 Conference held in Innsbruck, Austria, August 20-24, 2023.

GRADUATE STUDENT THESIS DEFENSE 

Michela Palumbo, a graduate student at the University of Foggia, completed her thesis defense for the Doctorate program on “Management of Innovation in Agriculture and Food Systems of the Mediterranean Region” (Cycle XXXV). Her work on “COMPUTER VISION SYSTEM FOR NON-DESTRUCTIVE AND CONTACTLESS EVALUATION OF QUALITY TRAITS IN FRESH ROCKET LEAVES (Diplotaxis tenuifolia L.)” was presented in front of the Committee members including Prof. Roberto Romaniello of the University of Foggia, Prof. Roberto Beghi of the University of Milano, and Prof. Michele Mattetti of the University of Bologna. Michela’s thesis was part of the Project SUS&LOW (MIUR PRIN 2018) and was tutored by Project coordinator Prof. Giancarlo Colelli (Postharvest UniFG), Dr. Mariamary Cefola (ISPA CNR), and Dr. Giovanni Attolico (STIIMA CNR).

RESULTS OF PROJECT SUS&LOW WERE PRESENTED IN A SPECIAL SESSION OF MODEL-IT 2023 IN GERMANY 

Project SUS&LOW “Sustaining Low-Impact Practices in horticulture through Non-destructive approach to provide more Information on Fresh produce History & Quality” (funded by MUR-PRIN2018) was presented yesterday within the “VII International Symposium on Applications of Modelling as an Innovative Technology in the Horticultural Supply Chain” in Potsdam, Germany.

A special session included 5 different contributions as oral presentations, plus 2 contributions were presented as Poster.

Prof. Giancarlo Colelli participated in the round table of the International Project ORGANIC ECOSYSTEM (Boosting cross border Organic Ecosystem through enhancing agro-food alliances) coordinated by Dr. Lina Albitar for CIHEAM Bari.

During the round table Prof. Colelli illustrated Project SUS&LOW which aims to provide a non-destructive tool for real-time quality assessment and product discrimination based on low-input cultural practices.

SUS & LOW SCIENTISTS MEETING

Steering Committee of Project met on April 28  to discuss state of the art of Project activities as affected by the lockdown for Covid-19 health emergency, and plan next possible moves.

Project started last september and work packages run on-time until end of february, although time in social distancing has been used to analyze experimental data. 

Possibility to start field/greenhouses activities before summer will be critical in order to keep the pace, and stick with chronoprogram.
