On May 23, 2025, the University of Nueva Caceres (UNC), through its University Research Center (URC), proudly hosted the first Regional Student Research Summit in Bicol. The landmark event took place at the University of Nueva Caceres Social Hall, gathering bright young minds and esteemed academic leaders to celebrate and showcase innovative student research.
The summit commenced with welcoming remarks from Engr. Christine C. Bautista, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Linkages, who emphasized the importance of research in driving regional development. Special messages were delivered by UNC President Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Romeo Sumayo Jr., both underscoring the universityโs commitment to fostering a culture of inquiry and excellence.
The highlight of the morning was the plenary talk by Dr. Margarita Felipe-Fajardo on โTransformational Research.โ Her inspiring presentation challenged attendees to envision research not just as an academic exercise but as a powerful tool to create meaningful, positive change in society.
Following the plenary, the summit transitioned into dynamic student parallel sessions. These were thoughtfully organized into four thematic categories aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being; SDG 4: Quality Education; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth; SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
Each classroom featured research posters and live presentations by student researchers, who passionately shared their studies with both expert panels and their peers. The sessions highlighted the creativity, dedication, and innovative approaches of students as they addressed pressing global challenges through their research.
The summit culminated in an awarding ceremony celebrating the outstanding student achievements. Winners were recognized in each SDG category, with prizes awarded for the top three best paper presentations and the best research poster. These recognitions not only honored academic excellence but also encouraged the continued pursuit of impactful research among the regionโs future leaders.
