Important Things to Know About Proposing a New Course:
New courses must have a course director with a faculty appointment in the Medical School. If you aren't sure if your proposed course director has a faculty appointment, please reach out to your department chair to confirm.
New courses must be approved by:
The Clinical Education Manager
The Department Chair
The Director of Integrated Education: Clinical Years
The Assistant Dean for Curriculum
The Assistant Dean for Assessment and Evaluation
Finalized (fully complete) new course proposals must be submitted to clsched@umn.edu no later than 8 weeks prior to the start of a new semester (fall, spring, summer)
Once a course is fully approved and set up in MEdIS and the course directory, a new course announcement will be sent out to the class listservs.
New Elective Clerkship Directors
Request approval from Janell Lopez (lope0165@umn.edu). Janell will just confirm that the new director has a faculty appointment before approving the change in the course directory. You can read more about how to request a faculty appointment for a new director here.
Notify clsched@umn.edu to make the change in the course directory. Clsched will always confirm that this has already been approved through Janell before making the change.
Once the change is made in the course directory, the Clinical Scheduler will add the new elective course director to the Elective Clerkship Directors & Coordinators Google group and to the Clinical Education Committee Google group.
Course coordinator should make sure updates are made to course syllabi.

Notify clsched@umn.edu to make the change in the course directory.

New Required Clerkship Directors
Procedures for new required clerkship directors are more nuanced. Please reach out to Dr. Betsy Murray (kemurray@umn.edu) and Dr. Holly Proffitt (proff022@umn.edu) any time your department is considering bringing on a new required clerkship director.
New Departmental Coordinator/Required Course Coordinator
