Canvas Frequently Asked Questions
Canvas Frequently Asked Questions
If you can see that the section the student is in is properly cross listed into your base Canvas site, it may mean the student is not registered for some reason. If the student resolves the hold(s) prior to the course starting, they will be registered (and get Canvas access). If the hold is not resolved, the registrar will request that the clinical scheduler drop the course and let the student and coordinator know.
You can view Canvas role types and their associated permissions here: https://it.umn.edu/services-technologies/how-tos/canvas-role-types
As an instructor or course designer, you will sometimes want to view and test a course site from the student's perspective. You may want to know:
Is content visible?
Is there content that should be hidden from view?
Does the student experience of content organization and sequencing make sense?
Are the activities correctly configured?
You can find answers to the above questions here: https://it.umn.edu/services-technologies/how-tos/canvas-enroll-test-student
Note that you can also simulate the student experience by using the built-in Canvas Student View function described in Instructure’s article View a course using a test student. Though handy, there are some things you cannot do.
MEdIS sends scheduling information to PeopleSoft once a week for the current semester. This also updates Canvas course enrollment. The day of the week changes each semester. You can reach out to the Medical School Registrar at medregistrar@umn.edu if you need to know what day that is for the current semester.
Once a student's scheduling information is sent to PeopleSoft, Canvas should update within 10 minutes. They run a sync every ten minutes between PeopleSoft and Canvas.
For upcoming semesters, you can plan that registration will not begin pulling into PeopleSoft from MEdIS until at least 1 month prior to the start of the semester. Once it starts pulling for a specific semester, that's when it will start the weekly pull in that is mentioned above.
Yes, students can easily change their name in Canvas.
To do so, the student can go to the account button in the upper-left corner of Canvas, and select the Settings option. There they can change the names they use. It is listed there a few times, and they probably will want to change it in all the categories.
If a student's name is incorrect at the account level (PeopleSoft), the student should call 612-301-4357 (University of Minnesota Technology Help Line).
Important to note is that all grades from Canvas are pushed to PeopleSoft by the student ID number so there is no impact on grading when a student makes a name change in Canvas.
You can reach out to lope0165@umn.edu with any Canvas questions related to cross listing, access for staff/faculty/students, and site creation.
For questions about editing your site, please reach out to canvas@umn.edu or refer to the Canvas training materials online.
