Daniel Duprez, M.D., PhD

Daniel Duprez (dupre007@umn.edu) is Professor of Medicine, Donald and Patricia Garofalo Chair for Preventive Cardiology, Director of Research of the Rasmussen Center of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, and Adjunct Professor in Epidemiology and Community Health in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. His research focus is to improve early detection of cardiovascular disease, leading to new effective therapeutic approaches. One of his areas of expertise in the study of biomarkers and their predictive value for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in several study cohorts such as MESA, CARDIA and HIV study populations (SMART and START studies). He has studied the role of lipoprotein particles and markers of inflammation and coagulation in CVD outcomes for HIV patients. Dr. Duprez is the PI for several NIH grants in MESA Elasticity and START Elasticity, and is involved in other NIH grants as a CO-PI/Sub-investigator. With more than 25 years of involvement in clinical trials, he has trained and mentored over 40 junior faculty, fellows, and medical students in the following topics: arterial elasticity in heart transplant, biomarkers and analysis of central hemodynamics in LVAD patients, biomarkers and arterial elasticity in HIV patients, biomarkers and arterial elasticity in the Tsimané population (in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology), biomarkers and lipoprotein particles in auto-immune disease, biomarkers and arterial elasticity as early indicators of cardiovascular disease in survivors of cancer, and the interaction of lipids with the NT-proBNP protein. He is on several scientific grant review committees nationally (AHA and NIH) and internationally (EU, Canada, France, Italy, Belgium, Singapore and South Africa). He has authored 50 books chapters and more than 250 publications. Several representative publications from his studies include:

Research Projects available with Dr. Duprez include the following:

  • Detection of new biomarkers, functional and structural markers in early CVD detection

  • Arterial pulse wave analysis to understand the ventricular vascular coupling in CV health and disease

  • Study of the effect of inflammation and viral infection on early markers of CVD outcome
