A full day session for us to jointly SPARK! new ideas for research and collaboration, involving the UM community and our stakeholders in addressing "Urban Sustainability Challenges". Join us to support and enhance UM's sustainability role and stewardship as the oldest urban campus in Klang Valley!
8.30 AM - 01:00 PM
Universiti Malaya is an "urban campus" at the heart of Klang Valley - located at the bustling metropolitan area of Kuala Lumpur and just next to Petaling Jaya City in Selangor. Join us for an ideation session with our stakeholders who can SPARK! new ideas to enhance the impact of UM community's future collaborative research, education and engagement activities to address the sustainability of this unique urban context. As a part of the session, UM's new sustainability related research and collaborative programmes will be introduced, plus two important SDG related multi-stakeholder network that UM is a part of: Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Kuala Lumpur SDG Centre. The main event will be an ideation session with stakeholders from three key sectors: Government, Business and the Third Sector. Each session will consist of speakers from different organizations who will each provide a 5 minutes flash talk, followed by a collective Q&A with the audience. Each session will be moderated by UM's senior sustainability researchers. Concurrently all participants will also have the opportunity to contribute research ideas through an online platform or post-it boards that we will provide at the session venue. All ideas will then be collected and shared with the session participants after the event.

Established in 2015, UM Living Labs (UMLL) action research programme is based on strategic partnership between Ecocampus Unit @ UM Sustainability and Development Centre (UMSDC) and Department of Development and Estate Maintenance (JPPHB) to enhance the sustainability of UM's development activities while also utilising UM's urban campus as a living lab (real life testbed) for urban sustainability solutions. In this approach, UM researchers (under the coordination of UMSDC) join hands with JPPHB staff and other stakeholders to systematically improve UM’s performance in different greening and sustainabiility areas according to specific targets - guided by the UM Ecocampus Blueprint (2016) and the UM Sustainability Policy (2022). With its orientation in driving research and innovation towards practical action and long term impact for our urban campus and nearby communities/stakeholders - the UMLL programme has been designed to be pragmatic, collaborative, and inter/trans-disciplinary in nature. We look forward to expand the collaboration this year with more faculties (especially through the latest mandate given to UMSDC to promote campus and urban sustainability as a topic for the upcoming 2023/2024 student FYP projects), the research community (for future living lab ideas) and also with other internal and external stakeholders (to enhance and upscale living lab activities and impact in the real world).
