Artist Statement
I am an introvert artist who mainly draws with graphite pencil. My father influenced me to draw at a young age of 6 when he was drawing Marvel characters like Wolverine and Hulk. Most of the art I’ve done is for everyone to see because I want to hear their opinion of my artwork. My artwork is comprised of Anime, realistic, and Gorillaz art style.
Before entering UIC I used graphite pencils for my art, but now I currently work with ink, acrylic paint, and charcoal. My inspiration sparked when I first watched an anime called Dragon Ball Z and that is when I started using those art styles in creating my art. I realized that drawing anime isn’t going to show my worth as an artist so I decided to draw people to broaden my art skills.
I came to UIC to do more than just drawing. In my classes, I am learning how to use different types of mediums like painting and drawing. When I draw, I draw lightly first to avoid any mistakes because I want my drawing to be clean. Along the way if I see any mistakes like proportions then I would correct it till I get the exact shape I wanted a drawing to be. Once completed I post my work on Instagram and Snapchat. I would get a few responses back about my artwork looking nice or awesome. When I show my art I want it to be presentable for the audience to view. I engage my audience by using art styles like Anime and Gorillaz, and if I wanted to surprise them, then once in awhile I would draw both art styles in the same setting.
I make my art presentable because I want to show my viewers no mistakes. Artists don’t show mistakes unless it is intentional for them to show to their audience. I mainly draw with graphite because it was the only tool I had to work with when I was in high school, and that is why I feel most comfortable using this tool. I study art at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) located at 700 S. Halsted st. I show my art pieces at the Art and Exhibition Hall in my respective classrooms for critiques.
