Hi! I was born and raised in Chicago. I'm the first one to go to college in my family. I have two dogs and hopefully more to come (just have to convince my mother). I love getting little tattoos and freaking out over dogs.
This is the place my high school friend and I come to every morning on Monday's, Wednesday's, and Friday's. It's hard to see each other as often as we used to, especially since we have different majors, but on those days, we have an hour to get together and eat. This place is crowded and loud because everyone is getting to class, but we enjoy it because we have a nice view. It has become a sort of tradition. Every time I pass by, I'm reminded of the smell of our food, her laughter, and the sound of the doors opening and closing.
"What is claiming space?"
Claiming space is about letting others know that you were there. It's about making sure that history knows you existed. In the case of Claiming Space in the Jane Addams Hull House, young people make statements with their art about the violence in their community, the lack of funds and the shutting down of the schools in their area. Claiming space is bringing awareness.
Cassandra, yes! This is an excellent description of what it means to claim space, and how the Hull House exhibit gives young people the power to raise awareness about violence and school closures through art making.
