Earn Your Scientific Diving Certification at UCSC!
BIOE 75 focuses on refining fundamental dive safety principles while introducing techniques in scientific diving. Course work includes lectures, field practical training, confined water and ocean SCUBA dives. Topics include diving physics, physiology, decompression theory, dive planning, aquatic environment, navigation, search and recovery, blue water diving, emergency response/rescues, and subtidal sampling techniques. The course meets or exceeds AAUS standards and provides students an opportunity to become certified in scientific diving.
You must have Basic (Open Water), Advanced, and Rescue Diver certifications prior to BIOE 75.
You must provide copies of your last 12 dive logs, including evidence of diving experience in temperate ocean conditions within the last 6 months
You must also be certified in diver first aid (CPR/AED, First Aid, Oxygen administration)
You must be medically cleared to SCUBA dive under AAUS/UCSC standards (UCSC Diving Medical Packet)
All divers need to be members of the Divers Alert Network (DAN), insurance is highly encouraged.
All trainees must complete the AAUS eLearning Scientific Diver Course
Trainees must also satisfy the water skills evaluation, which includes swimming, skin-diving, and SCUBA skills.
