Students may encounter unique situations that require exceptions to standard academic policies or major requirements. Academic Requests may include Appeals, Articulations, or Course Substitutions.
Appeals to qualifiy for and delcare an EEB-sponsored majors should ONLY be submitted if explicitly directed to do so by an EEB advsior. If you are directed to submit an appeal, follow the instructions and complete the form at this link.
NOTE: EEB majors are screening majors which require qualification course completion prior to admission/transfer to UCSC. Appeals are not an option/not accepted for junior transfer students who do not complete all qualification courses prior to admission and transfer to UCSC..
Please note that the information you share in your appeal or with your advisors will be kept private and shared only with campus officials as required to serve you in an advising capacity or process your appeal. However, in limited circumstances, including those related to potential harm to yourself or others, sexual assault, and abuse, we may be required by law to report incidents you disclose to other need-to-know offices on campus such as the Title IX Office and/or University of California Police Department. If you are in need of support for any issues, please see the list of confidential and/or support resources.
Contact eebadvising@ucsc.edu if you have questions about qualification, declaration or appeals.
Articulation:
EEB defines a course Articulation as one which is deemed to be directly equivalent to a UCSC course, but which is completed at an External Institution, including any courses completed as part of Wildlands Studies programs.
See limitations to Articulation within the EEB Request for Course Articulation or Substitution Form.
Steps to request an Articulation:
Obtain a copy of the course description and syllabus for the course you are hoping to take at a different institution for Articulation review. The syllabus should include a week-by-week list of lecture topics, the textbook used, and how student performance is evaluated. If you cannot locate the syllabus, contact the institution/department offering the course to obtain the most recently available version. Requests will not be reviewed if any of these required items are missing.
Complete an EEB Request for Course Articulation or Substitution Form (one per course requested), selecting the appropriate request type (either Articulation or Substitution).
For Articulation requests, determine if there is a similar BIOE course taught at UCSC.
Review course descriptions in the university catalog that will satisfy degree requirements. If you believe there is a BIOE course offered at UCSC that 'matches' the course being offered elsewhere, list that course on the request form.
Submit all materials to EEB Advising via the EEB Request for Course Articulation or Substitution Form.
Do not submit your request directly to faculty. EEB Advisors will route your request to the appropriate reviewer. Required supporting documentation must be uploaded inside the request form in PDF format, preferably an English translation version present in all documentation.
For questions or clarification about this process, contact eebadvising@ucsc.edu.
EEB Advising will email you the results once they're available (and within 15 business days of the request being submitted to faculty for review). If approved, you must complete the course with a grade of C (2.0) or better for it to satisfy EEB major requirements. Grades of C– or lower will not be accepted for meeting major requirements.
A reminder: Research courses, Independent Studies for research credit, and DC courses are not eligible for articulation or substitution. Courses to meet these requirements must be completed at UCSC.
Substitution:
EEB defines a course Substitution as an upper division course that is taken at UCSC and is determined to fulfill a specific requirement or requirement group (Topical or General Elective, for example) for EEB-sponsored majors, but which is not deemed to be equivalent to a different UCSC course.
See limitations to Substitutions within the EEB Request for Course Articulation or Substitution Form.
Steps to request a Substitution:
Obtain a copy of the course description and syllabus for the UCSC course you for which you are requesting a substitution. The syllabus should include a week-by-week list of lecture topics, the textbook used, and how student performance is evaluated. If you cannot locate the syllabus, contact the department offering the course to obtain the most recently available version. Requests will not be reviewed if any of these required items are missing.
