Field courses provide unique opportunities to understand ecological and evolutionary processes through firsthand experience in field environments. These can be two, five, or seven-unit courses or course/lab combinations; more intensive ten-unit courses; or completely immersive field quarters.
Two Unit Field Courses:
BIOE 20F Field Biology in Practice (fulfills PR GE). Enrollment by application/permission number.
BIOE 82 Introduction to Field Research and Conservation (fulfills PR GE). Enrollment by application/permission number.
BIOE 112L Ornithology Field Studies (Concurrent enrollment in BIOE 112 is required. Offered fall of odd-numbered years.)
BIOE 114L Herpetology (Concurrent enrollment in BIOE 114 is required. Offered spring of even-numbered years.) Enrollment by application/permission number.
BIOE 155L Freshwater Ecology Laboratory (Previous or concurrent enrollment in BIOE 155 is required).
Five Unit Field Courses:
BIOE 141L Behavioral Ecology Field Course (usually offered in Winter quarters)
BIOE 158L Marine Ecology Laboratory
Seven Unit Field Courses:
BIOE 128L Large Marine Vertebrates Field Course

Ten Unit Field Courses:
BIOE 145 Plant Ecology + BIOE 145L Field Methods in Plant Ecology (BIOE 145L requires previous or concurrent enrollment in BIOE 145). Each fulfills 1/2 of DC requirements.
BIOE 150 Ecological Field Methods + BIOE 150L Ecological Field Methods Laboratory. Lab portion fulfills 1 DC requirement.
BIOE 161 Kelp Forest Ecology + BIOE 161L Kelp Forest Ecology Laboratory* (Concurrent enrollment is required. Lab portion fulfillss 1 DC requirement)
*Completion of BIOE 75 Scientific Diving Certification is a prerequisite for enrollment in this course. Be sure to plan ahead to be SCUBA ready.
