In EEB, our goal is for students to participate in degree-defining experiences. These opportunities can take many forms, such as field courses, full-immersion field quarters, or field-based programs abroad. Because these experiences require advance planning, we encourage students to explore their options early.
Field Courses
Multiple field-based courses in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments are offered.
Most require special preparation or are available only by application. Plan ahead and reach out to eebadvising@ucsc.edu with questions.
Field Quarters
Field quarters, or "Supercouses", are intensive total immersion experiences. These courses provide up to 20 units of credit. Three different UCSC field quarters, and a UC field quarter experience, are options. Enrollment is by application only. A single Field Quarter (regardless of number of upper division courses completed) will only satisfy 1 of 2 required lab/field courses for Marine Biology BS, Ecology and Evolution BS, or Plant Sciences BS majors. If Biology BA is your major, reach out to an EEB advisor to discuss field quarter options to satisfy major requirements.
Programs Abroad
The UCEAP Costa Rica Monteverde and Queensland programs are preapproved programs that fulfill EEB major requirements. EEB majors also participate in many other programs, including Wildlands Studies programs. Study Abroad coursework which students wish to be articulated for major course requirements must be approved PRIOR TO EEB advisors signing study abroad planning documentation. This process can take up to 15 business days for resolution, so early planning and outreach to advisors is essential.
Undergraduate Research Courses are another option for gaining valuable research/field experience. Please email eebadvising@ucsc.edu with questions and planning of research courses.
PLEASE NOTE:
Faculty have determined the BIOMA Sea Turtles Field Course and Expedition
IS NOT available as an option to complete degree requirements for EEB-sponsored majors.
Requests for substitutions will not be approved.
