Understanding Academic Advising at UCSC
All students at UCSC have two main types of advisors available to help you through your academic journey at UCSC:
College advisors are responsible for helping with completion of General Education and other UC requirements, many of the administrative processes you may encounter at UCSC (how to enroll part-time, for example), and to identify a second major or minor or a new major if you decide to change.
EEB Department advisors (that’s us!) are here to answer questions about qualification and declaration of the major and to help you plan for your academic journey beginning, for first-year students, in your second year at UCSC. Feel free to contact us at eebadvising@ucsc.edu if you have questions!
First year students will also have a third type of advisor available to help you with advising during your first year:
Science Excellence (Sci-X) advisors are available to assist all first year students in the Physical and Biological Sciences (including EEB) with academic planning to declare your major on time. They communicate with first year students about ALEKS, the math assessment required for all majors sponsored in the EEB Department, and about webinars available for first-year students to get started in the sciences at UCSC. They may be reached at sci-x@ucsc.edu.
Meet your EEB Advising Team
Hello everyone, my name is Frank Andrade. As a first-generation Latinx graduate and proud UCSC alum, I am a product of student support programs like EOP, STARRS & Financial Aid. Having also worked in community college support programs like EOPS and Financial Aid for several years, I am excited to bring my personal and professional experience to help EEB students thrive! I take a holistic approach to advising and student success. Email me here with general questions about EEB-sponsored majors.
Hi there! I’m a proud UCSC alum with a degree in Plant Sciences, and I bring my own experience as a transfer, first-generation, and non-traditional student to my advising work. My holistic approach is all about supporting you in finding your own path, whether that means navigating degree requirements or exploring new opportunities. Outside of work, you can find me cruising the coast on my motorcycle or enjoying the Pacific Ocean with some good coffee and the company of my pomsky, Sage. Email me here with general questions and with specific questions about:
Research courses & opportunities
Senior Thesis
EEB 4+1 Bachelors/Masters Pathway
I have been advising students on how to understand higher education institutions and how to maximize their experiences in those settings since 1991. The 2026-2027 academic year is my fourth with EEB and my eighth at UCSC. My philosophy of advising is that it is an opportunity for teaching and learning, as well as for student self-empowerment and self-advocacy. I enjoy watching Lega Serie A and working on projects to make my home my favorite place to be. Email me here with general questions and with specific questions about:
Changing your major (including for Junior Transfer students)
Major Appeals, Petitions & Declaration
Requests for Course Articulations and Substitutions
Be sure your email to eebadvising@ucsc.edu has the appropriate subject heading and is addressed to the appropriate advisor. Student ID numbers are always appreciated in your emails, too, as they help us assist you more quickly.
