Two video conference options. What to choose?
Zoom Meeting is a robust tool that allows you to complete many tasks. With the many abilities comes a few choices to set up the most secure environment. Zoom Meetings can be made by staff and shared as a join link to students. Zoom Meetings can be used for IEP meetings, staff meetings, or PLC groups. There are many controls for larger groups (over 15+); such as muting all participants, host controls screen sharing, host controls chat.
Zoom Meeting licenses have been purchased for certificated classroom teachers and substitute teachers. Zoom Meeting Basic accounts are used for all remaining staff.
Google Meet is a simpler video conferencing tool. It works well with other Google tools; like Google Calendar. It available for all staff to start a Google Meet and students can participate in a staff created Google Meet. It is also available for staff to share and work with staff. It can also be used for IEP meetings, staff meetings, or PLC groups. Google Meet has many of the features of Zoom. It does have FEWER management tools for meeting hosts to apply to students.
Zoom is a powerful tool. With that power, comes a lot of choices. There has been news about "Zoom Bombing" of classrooms. This is were unwanted outsiders are joining a Zoom Meeting and being unkind, racist, or explicit. To avoid this, there are few keys complete before your meeting begins and after it starts. Keeping students and staff safe is not new to schools; in-person or online. Using Zoom is new as a virtual classroom is new.
