Health Office Screenings
As school nurses, we work to support your child's overall health and well-being, as countless research studies support the connection between good health and learning outcomes. We are here to help you and your child understand health-related growth and development. During the school year, we will be conducting the Massachusetts state-mandated screenings for vision, hearing and scoliosis. Children who wear glasses should be sure they have them in school. Not every screening is administered in every grade level; see the grade level designation for each screening area below.
Vision Screening Grades K-5
Hearing Screening Grades K-3
Postural Screening (Scoliosis) Grades 5 & 6
BMI Grades 1 & 4
Students in Grades 1 & 4 will have their height and weight measured to be used to calculate their body mass index (BMI). BMI is a screening tool to determine whether a child is potentially underweight or overweight. Your child's BMI is based on the ratio of height to weight and reported as percentile ranking considering the child's age and gender. The CDC created these rankings to identify children who may be at specific health risks, such as insulin resistance, and heart disease.
All medical information is kept strictly confidential. Parents and legal guardian may request in writing, that their child not participate in screening, BMI determination and/or head checks for lice.
Feel free to contact your school nurse with any questions.
