Have you ever wondered why you walk into a room and completely forget why you walked in there? Or why you behave differently when you are with a group of friends compared to being sat on your own in your room? Well, if so, then psychology is the subject for you. Psychology is the study of the human mind and behaviour. This means you get to learn about the fascinating nature of human beings and why we are all so strange (yes, we really are). Not only will psychology help you navigate your way through life by helping you understand yourself and other people better, we also get to have lots of fun by completing psychological experiments in lessons, as well as creating your own ones.

Year 10
Research methods – Understand what methods psychologist use to carry out research and collet data
Memory – How we encode, process and store information. Different types of memory and understanding why we often forget information.
Perception – Understand optical illusions and how our brain processes information from the outside world
Development – How our brain develops from birth to adults and the different stages we go through in childhood to understand the world around us
Social influence – The understanding of why we behave differently in groups. Why are we more or less likely to help someone in danger? We do we obey authority?
Year 11
Brain and neuropsychology – The different areas of the brain and their functions. How brain damage an affect behaviour
Language and thought – Are we born to develop language or do we learn it? How does culture affect our understanding of language and thought?
Psychological problems – Why do some people suffer with depression? Is it normal? Why do some people suffer with addiction? Understand mental health better
2 x 1 hour 45-minute exams at the end of year 11.
100 marks on each paper
Paper 1 – Research methods, memory, perception and development
Paper 2 – Social influence, brain and neuropsychology, language and thought, psychological problems
Career paths – Therapist or counsellor, Psychiatry and medicine, Sports psychologists, Lawyers and barristers, Marketing and advertising.
