Media Studies is a practical, investigative and stimulating GCSE course that allows students to explore media concepts and theories in detail. This is a highly relevant course as students learn to explore and critique the messages that are communicated to us through different media forms.
An ability to analyse and explore different media platforms. An interest in designing and creating your own media work. The ability to explore other people’s opinions and apply these to set texts. The ability to concentrate on lengthy media products and the ideas contained within these.
Students will study a range of differing media forms including:
Newspapers
Print Adverts
Television
Film
Music Video
Magazines
Video Gaming
Radio
Websites & social media
Students will gain exposure to digital media technologies as they plan, create and execute their own productions. Students will use a variety of media software and hardware to create their own production pieces. Production units taught include the creation of magazine pages, film posters and adverts.
Students will also study and apply the ideas of different theorists to these forms of Media and consider their own interpretations.
The examination board is Eduqas. Areas of the framework are studied in the following way across the three components:
Component 1: Exploring the Media (Written Examination = 40%)
Component 2: Understanding Media Forms & Products (Written Examination = 30%)
Component 3: Creating Media Products (Non-Exam Assessment = 30%)
The course has direct relevance to career choices involving work within the media, advertising, graphic design, digital and ICT-related fields, the music industry, film, television, radio, journalism as well as the creative and expressive arts.
