History is an important subject to help us understand the way the world is today. Our modern society has been shaped by a number of events that have taken place over hundreds of years. Knowing our History helps us to understand why there are differences in culture, politics, religion and society all across the globe. We will be studying a variety of topics to make sure there is something for everyone at GCSE.
This GCSE prepares students for further study at KS5 and develops their skills of narrative, explanation, evaluation and source-use in history. Such skills of analysis can be used in a variety of wider contexts in life as well as other subject areas.
You will need to be enthusiastic about History and the analysis of past events. It is essential that you enjoy reading and writing as a large element of the course requires these, including essay writing in exam questions. The large amount of content in the course means you will need to complete homework and revision tasks independently.
The GCSE is split into 3 papers with the following topics:
Paper 1 – Thematic Study and History Environment
Option 11 - Section A: The Historic Environment – the British Sector of the Western front 1914-18: Injuries, treatment and the trenches.
Section B: Medicine in Britain c1250-present
Paper 2 – Period Study and British Depth Study –
Option P1 - Spain and the “New World”, c1490-c1555
Option B4 - Early Elizabethan England 1558-1588
Paper 3 – Modern Depth Study
Option 33 - The USA 1954-1975: conflict at home and abroad
Paper 1: Thematic Study and Historic Environment
Written examination - 30% of GCSE (1 hour and 20 minutes)
Paper 2: Period Study and British Depth Study
Written examination – 40% of GCSE (1 hour and 50 minutes)
Paper 3: Modern Depth Study
Written examination – 30% of GCSE (1 hour and 30 minutes)
