The majority of people surrounding SK BA Kelalan are from the Lun Bawang community. The community is an indigenous tribe to the northern part of Sarawak. SK BA Kelalan itself is tucked away in an island surrounded by forest.
The issues:
1. Indigenous knowledge isn’t taught in school and it will be gone forever provided no measures taken to instil this to the young ones.
2. The means of income for the indigenous people comes from agricultural fields but it is seasonal (paddy plantation). Hence, livelihood is disrupted seasonally. Eco-tourism could therefore help in securing a continuous income flow.
3. There is no Forest School in Sarawak despite Sarawak being a state declared as rich in biodiversity in Malaysia.
