What is the gist?
Kenosha residents who are participating in the 2nd annual Freezin' for a Reason are camping outdoors to help raise awareness for those who are homeless or in need of food in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The people in Kenosha should be aware of what is happening in the city they live in. With Freezin' for a Reason they can make a greater impact in Kenosha by helping others whether it be volunteering or donating.
According to Pastor Jonathan Barker, last year’s event brought in 8,483 pounds of food donations and raised just a little over $12,000.
This event brings in a whole lot more food and money than you would originally think and now there is another chance to keep on raising more food and money for those who need a helping hand.
“It’s always humbling during Wisconsin winters to think people are sleeping outside,” said Rev. Jonathan Barker. “That is always important for people to remember.”
People are living outside and Wisconsin winters especially during the night it can get freezing cold and the Grace Welcome Center is trying everything it can to try and help these people. They are seeing for themselves what it's like to live like the homeless by spending a night outside in the Wisconsin winter.
After the event, on Monday morning, residents of Kenosha and other areas had donated 44,182.45 dollars and two pallets worth of food, roughly 1,200 pounds.
With this one event alone it brought it more money and donations than just a regular day and it really brought more awareness to the community and the people inside the community.
Last year, the Grace Welcome Center Food Pantry gave out nearly 300,000 pounds of food to 6,835 families, serving more than 14,000 adults and 8,600 children. Pastor Jonathan Barker said they serve on average 135 families a week.
This is important to remember because this is why we, people, need to donate. Without the donations they could not give away as much food as they need to, to the people who might just need a helping hand.
