Lesson Two

Grammar Module Two, Unit Four: Conjunctions and Clauses

LESSON TWO

Today's Lesson will give you more practice on recognizing Independent and Dependent Clauses.

Review: In Lesson One you practiced finding each verb child and the subject of the verb. You also learned that there are different kinds of clauses  -- Independent Clauses and Dependent Clauses. Independent Clauses  can stand on their own because they have not only a subject and a verb but  also a complete thought. Dependent Clauses have a subject and a verb also,  but there is no complete thought present. An Independent Clause can stand  as a complete sentence. A Dependent Clause cannot be a complete sentence  because there is no complete thought present. In other words, a Dependent  Clause is really a sentence fragment and must not be written as a complete  sentence with a capital letter and a period.

Independent Clause -- subject, verb, complete thought

Dependent Clause -- subject, verb, NO complete thought
