Lesson Three

ELAR Level Four, Unit Three: Homophones

        LESSON THREE

You are doing a good job learning the homophones! Now remember that homophones sound the same. A pair of homophones are the words blue and blew. They sound the same but do not have the same meaning. Blue is a color and blew means to blow hard. See how they are used in sentences:

Sally put on her blue dress.

She blew out ten candles on the cake.

Let's learn some more homophones. Read the list of words and their meanings. Remember that the words in each pair sound the same but mean something else.

Homophone Example One

need - want or required

knead - squeeze or press

Homophone Example Two

tax - fees or dues

tacks - short nails

Homophone Example Three

doe - a female deer

dough - flour and water mix

Now read below and see how some of the words are used in a short story.

Mommy will need some water to make the bread dough. She will have to knead it with her hands before she puts it in the pan. While she is baking bread, I am hanging my drawing up on the wall with some tacks.
