Lesson Two

ELAR Level Five, Unit Two: Reading & SAT Vocabulary

   LESSON TWO

You have learned in Lesson One that the English language that you are studying is truly the most popular language in the world! You also learned that words are the tools that we use to think, speak, and learn. Words make up our thoughts and dreams.

Words are everywhere you look from what you read on labels of cereal boxes to great big words on billboards. The more words you know and understand, the more you will learn about everything all around you -- everything that interests you!

Learning the definition and spelling of new vocabulary words makes what you say and write more interesting and colorful. Also knowing so much will help you do your best in everything.

       PRACTICE

Here is your list of vocabulary words and their definitions again. Look them over carefully, perhaps read them aloud; and when you are ready, please do the following quizzes.

nuzzle - rub or push gently

podium - raised platform

plummets - fall suddenly

hasten - hurry

blithe - carefree and happy

To be blithe is to be happy and carefree.
