I cannot believe it has already been over a year since I started working as the Student Council adviser. These past 14 months have been amazing. Despite the amount of work, long hours, and the ups and downs that have popped up along the way, being part of the Student Council has been a fantastic experience. I have learned a lot about myself as a teacher, mother, and especially as a leader. Since my first year as a teacher, I have experienced our impact on students. In this new role, though, I finally understood how that impact helps them improve and grow. I made many memories in my first year as a StuCo Adviser; I am ready to experience a new year of plans, activities, and laughs.
The 2023-2024 Executive Board has worked hard since May to create a school year full of activities for the student body. From its theme and slogan to its daily announcements, this board is committed to strengthening the sense of community and family in our school. Their mission is to help every student from PPK to 12th grade embrace their authentic personalities and share their talents and achievements with our TASIS family. We want to celebrate every milestone, every goal accomplished, and every experience. We have a great year ahead; let's work together to live it fully.
I cannot wait to make memories with each member of this year's Student Council and share my experiences with our community from my perspective.
I cannot believe that the first semester is already over! These past few months have flown by so quickly. I am so glad I have many pictures to remember how busy but most importantly how happy we were.
Since the induction in August, the Student Council has worked tirelessly to create an enjoyable first semester for our student body. From Final Friday activities and Monday Videos to logo contests, donation drives, and t-shirt sales, we have been busier than ever. It has been a fulfilling experience to witness the Executive Board generate and execute their ideas while striving to be innovative and impactful. I am proud of their efforts to support and guide class boards during activities while also exhibiting leadership and empathy.
This post would be too long if I were to recount all the moments we have experienced over the past few months. However, I would like to highlight a few special occasions that I will soon not forget.
In October, we were fortunate enough to participate in the opening activities of our new building, The Wellness and Athletic Center (a.k.a. The WAC). Alongside the eleventh and twelfth-grade StuCo members, the Executive Board worked hard during the WAC Gala but also celebrated the new wellness and athletic facilities that will enhance their learning experience. On that night, we wore our finest attire and sneakers to welcome all members of our community who joined us to celebrate this wonderful achievement. Later that month, we had our first pep rally at the WAC. It was so fantastic to cheer for our student-athletes and recognize their accomplishments during their fall seasons. This pep rally will be unforgettable because our mascot, Claws, accompanied us for the first time.
In November, we had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the LEAD National Student Leadership Conference organized by the NASSP. Seven StuCo members, along with the NHS Board members, represented our school in this conference, which focused on helping students improve their leadership skills and meaningfully impact their school communities. Over three days, our students had the opportunity to interact with other student leaders from across the United States and other parts of Latin America, sharing ideas and strategies that aim to make a difference in their respective schools. Our StuCo president, Alana Fuentes, accepted the NASSP challenge to be a LEAD Conference presenter. In a room full of students, she presented this year's plan to highlight every student's uniqueness in our school. In her session, she shared activities to connect with more students and classes while celebrating their achievements and skills. I felt so proud of her and her willingness to discuss ideas as well as brainstorm other alternatives to achieve different organizations’ goals. In addition to participating in the conference, our students had the chance to explore D.C., visit a U.S. Congressman, and talk to two alumni about their college experience and life after TASIS Dorado. This trip was a fantastic experience for our students. It gave them new perspectives and insights into their roles within our school community while creating stronger bonds between our student council members.
December finally arrived after a hectic few months, and we were all looking forward to taking a break. But before that, we excitedly celebrated Merry Week, one of the students' most beloved weeks, as it marks the beginning of winter festivities in our school. This year, Merry Week was more memorable than ever, as the Student Council had the privilege of organizing activities for the entire school for the first time ever.
We had a lot of fun watching the creativity of the secondary students and witnessing the delightful smiles of the elementary kids when we visited them during our candy cane delivery. These memories will always be cherished, especially the fantastic feeling of serving others, which was one of the goals that we accomplished with this year's toy drive. We would like to thank all the students and families who donated to this NHS, NJHS, and StuCo drive. With your help, we were able to share the magic of the season with more than six different organizations. Merry Week was a huge success, and the Executive Board could not be happier to finish the first semester with such a memorable week!
The second semester is only a few days away. Although we have a thousand plans and many activities on our agenda, I am excited to return to school and continue supporting this council in achieving even better results this semester.
