Mentorship Role Guide

Be very firm as the coach you see needs to change any bad habits. When a coach doesn’t learn by hearing, then show them. Bad instructors can ruin the business name, and Dawn and Clo need to know about it.
Read the evaluation form that the office texts you before the mentorship so that you're familiar with what we're looking for that week.
Read the appropriate weekly summary for each week that you see the coach to know what is supposed to be going on. For example, if you are seeing them during week 1 of the program, make sure you read the week 1 weekly summary.
You (as a mentor) need to make sure that you are very good at assessments and making OH LP by reviewing this document.
Arrive a little early to your shift to talk to the coach and see their opening procedure (if you start your mentorship at the beginning of their shift).
Introduce yourself to the coach. Say you are here to help them get ready for Open House (when parents come).
Explain your role:
That you are here to make them more of a superstar than they already are.
That you are going to see all of the coaches and watch their OH LP and give feedback to them.
Encourage them to ask all their questions to you as you are there to help them.
You also need to review the following two videos:
We will have sent them a blank copy of the evaluation form that you will be filling out for them so they know, but still let them know that you will be focusing on:
Safety (as it is #1)
Protecting Hotel Contract: Make sure they know everything on the checklist
First Day Procedures
OH LP (including assessments and Know the order they go in).
Tell them that if they make a mistake, you will keep pointing it out until you start seeing improvement.
Scanning: You will be counting OUT LOUD if they go over 5 second scans (counting out loud is mandatory and is the only way to make inadequate scanners better). Tell them you are not there to scan for them, so if they have to go to the bathroom or get equipment, they need to pretend you are not there and you want to see what the procedure is.
Report card chart: Get the coach to show you their report card chart and make sure you agree with what they wrote (level and if they’ll pass). If they don’t have it, do a couple of examples with them. You can refer to this page for assistance.
Ask the coach to pull out their OH LP and bring them to the side of the pool and put on a class for you as if you were a parent. Remember Safety and Protecting Hotel Contract is always number 1. Every mentoring shift fills out an evaluation form with questions focused on this. Open House lesson plans are to be started right away at the beginning of session, so they should have some to present to you.
There are 2 situations that may happen (depending on how good the coach is):
No Open House Lesson plans written: If they don’t have them written out help them write it. Copy the samples here by looking for the appropriate level. You might have to look at their report card chart to see what level the kid is supposed to be in.
Open House Lesson plans written out: Make corrections to their OH LP in pen, make sure they are going in the right order.
Make sure the OH LP goes in the correct order (warm up, swimming on front then back, etc). Coaches with combo OH LP should be having the older kids swim first and should have them keep going with limited rest.
While watching, give feedback and use your evaluation form, correcting as much as you can as you go.
Tell the coach you will be back and want to see your feedback executed, and that you will be reporting to Dawn and Clo how the integration of feedback is being handled.
Tell them they need to set goals for themselves based on the points they were struggling with and that they need to re-read these often.
Fill out the evaluation form that we texted you. Please be honest in your answers. We will be forwarding your evaluation to the coach once you have filled it out as some don’t seem to be taking mentorship feedback seriously enough, and it would be good for them to see where they need to improve. If you are worried that your feedback will upset the coach and make them quit, then you must text the extra feedback to the office as it is important that Dawn and Clo know that you have red flags.
