Gradebook Categories & Weights
There are three standard gradebook categories: Classwork, Homework, and Assessments. Scholars’ course grades are calculated with a weighted average of each gradebook category as outlined below.
Assignment Submission Policies
Homework assignments are always due at 11:59 PM and must be “turned in” on Google Classroom by the due date in order to be considered submitted and on time. Assignments turned in after 11:59 PM the night they are due are considered late.
Valid Grades
In addition to the numerical grades assigned to a given assignment or assessment using the relevant rubric or scale, the following valid grades may appear in scholar gradebooks.
Factors in a 0
M: Missing
DIS: Academic Dishonesty
UA: Unexcused Absence
Does not affect their grade
EX: Excused
NA: Not Applicable
Academic Redo & Revision
When scholars’ assignments are missing, incomplete, or do not meet the standard for effort by the due date and time, scholars are assigned to Academic Redo. After Academic Redo, scholars’ assignments will be graded on the relevant rubric and then the score will be decreased by one performance level.
Scholars may not revise their assignments for a higher grade outside of Academic Redo.
Assignment Makeups
Scholars cannot make up classwork or homework assignments that they miss due to absence.
If scholars have an excused absence, their grade will be EX.
If scholars have an unexcused absence, their grade will be UA.
Extra Credit
Assignments: There are no formal extra credit opportunities for classwork and homework.
Assessments: An Extra Credit category will be added to Academic Courses in which scholars have the opportunity to earn up to 5% on their total course grade based on their performance on certain assessments that will otherwise have a weight of 0.
Required Assessments
All internal and external assessments are mandatory, including the AP and SAT Exams. All scholars are assessed with the SA assessment scope for their grade level, regardless of their academic standing or any demographic or other designations or classifications.
Absences
Scholars who miss an assessment due to an excused absence must make it up upon their return to school within a maximum time frame of two weeks. Scholars who miss an assessment due to an unexcused absence cannot make it up.
If scholars miss an assessment due to an unexcused absence, they will receive a 0 (recorded in the gradebook as UA).
External assessment makeups may be limited due to New York State and College Board-established scheduling and policies.
Lateness
Scholars who miss an assessment due to being too late to school cannot make it up.
Scholars are considered too late to take an assessment once the proctor has started reading the directions.
If scholars miss an assessment due to being too late, they will receive a 0 (recorded in the gradebook as M).
Retakes
All high school scholars will be able to take retakes for their Trimester 3 Final Assessments. At the end of the trimester, the higher of the two assessment grades will be incorporated into the course grade.
