This unit was intended to play with and discover negative space. It is important to understand how to use the space around the centre point (the negative space).

My first piece for this unit was the Zentangle Value Strip. The point of this was to create a strip that had 10 boxes, each with a pattern that slowly got lighter the more boxes I filled. I made it with a Micron pen on 8" by 6" notebook paper. The process for this piece was rather rushed, I made it during my lunch. Since I didn't have much time to do it, I  didn't do a sketch beforehand, I just dove into it with a pen, making gradually lightening half-circles.

For the Negative Space Hand Drawing, I was tasked with drawing the outline of my hand, so no inside lines. I used a 2h pencil and drawing paper for this work. The process for this piece was pretty simple, I held my hand a position and drew what I saw.

My final project for this unit was "Leaflike to The Eye" my goal with this piece was to create something in the negative space around the leaves. To bring it together I used  2h graphite pencil,  pure watercolor,  Acrylic Paint,  and pen on Bristol board. I stared by creating a view finder with leaves I found outside and taping them to paper (Leaf Composition). I then copied what I saw in my viewfinder onto a piece of Bristol. I started with a base layer of tan watercolor to work on top of. Once I had a base layer, I went in with colored pencils to add details. Finally I used Acrylic paint to make sure the pupil was as black as possible. I chose to do an eye because I find eyes fascinating and I thought that having the white leaves over it would act as things you might see when you got hit on the head.

From zentangles to eyes , I loved exploring negative space in this way.
