Scratchboard
For this artwork, I chose a to recreate a photo I took of myself during an ice storm in scratchboard. I chose this photo because I really liked the way the ice glistened on the branches of the bush I am posing behind. I thought that scratchboard would be the perfect medium to accurately create icicles because of the black to white ratio. wanted to add my face because I thought that it would bring a nice focal point to the entire piece.
To create this work I used a scratchboard and scratchboard tools. The specific tools I used were: a fiberglass brush, and a six pointed needle tool.
The process of scratching was pretty therapeutic. I started by printing out my reference photo and copying it onto the scratchboard. I did this because it made the process of scratching away material a lot easier as I had a guide to go off. I worked section by section, branch by branch until I finished. I took my time because I wanted it to look like a photo. I really enjoyed this project and I am very happy with the end result.
