Extended Blind Contour Drawing

Wanna Shoe?

Sharpie, Alcohol Markers, Colored Pencil on Bristol Board

9'' by 12''

This piece started as an extended blind contour drawing. I drew my hand, Alex Gilbert, and my shoe without looking at my paper. For each of the drawings I never picked up my pen, it was all one line. I wanted to capture the essence of the three things I drew, not making them perfect likenesses.

The materials I used for this project were: a  black Sharpie to draw the lines of the extended blind contour. Then I went in with alcohol markers to color in the shapes and bring everything together.  I used a cloud blue Prismacolor colored pencil to do the background.

I wanted to use alcohol markers because you can blend with them, I wanted to create a smooth finish to the characters.  I used warm colors for the skin because I wanted to give the idea of human flesh without it being a natural skin tone.  Since it stated with a very loose drawing, I needed to tie everything together somehow, so I made the had holding the shoe and I extended the wrist off the page.  I purposely  left the circle on the shoe black because I liked the way it contrasted with the rest of the piece. Finally, I shaded the backroad with colors pencil. I chose light blue because It is in the same color scheme as some of the other colors in the piece but it stood out and contrasted nicely.
