Artist's Statement

In the piece, “To be Revisited” there are two flowers. They are certainly abstracted, but they are definitely meant to be there. One flower is made to be darker, and the other is made to be lighter. This was meant to signify light and dark, and because they each have a little of the other (the dark one has a light background and vise versa) it was meant to show that the dark and light are the same. The words on it are supposed to be a poem, something that would help the observer to grasp more clearly what the piece was saying. This did not turn out as I wanted, so it will be something I come back to, hence the title "To be Revisited."

I made the piece out of primarily Graphite, Charcoal and Oil pastel. I then added Sharpie on top. I started this on Bristol Board. When I started, I made my zoomed shoe lines from Graphite, with a number 4B Pencil. Then I added Charcoal. I worked with little pieces of willow charcoal, and they were of all different sizes. having different sized pieces of charcoal helped me a lot. I then used the Oil pastel. I went in this order, because as I found out, Charcoal will not go over Oil Pastel. Finally, the sharpie was added. I chose to start writing in Sharpie because I figured that it had the best chance of not smudging.

I started this piece in Graphite, by making the lines of my zoomed shoe image even bigger. I then added the charcoal, and started making the sweeping curvy lines of a flower. I did this on one side of my lines, and on the other side, I started to make a Zinnia flower with Oil pastel. I wasn’t loving what it was turning out to be, so I just started to take warm colors and swirl them around the Zinnia. This created a new kind of flower. I added charcoal on the outsides, and it became the background. Other side of the line, when did the charcoal flower with my finger till it was monochromatic and just one thickness/darkness. Then I added the Sharpie around the center of the charcoal flower. When this didn't work out as I planned, I made my Sharpie words into The Petals of the flower. Finally I added Oil Pastel in warm colors for a background. When I go back to this I will probably take the ideas of this piece and start again, or I will keep working with it to see what happens.
