Paper Reflection Sculpture

Alone

In "Alone" I explore one word that encompasses the last semester. Alone doesn't quite fit the last semester, but captures some of it. I also played with the words lost, rebuilding, and depressed. The piece is purposefully able to be reconfigured to show how these emotions are constantly changing. The larger and smaller groups were made from when I was doing the word "rebuilding" but they seemed to still apply here. Each of the blocks is similar to the others around it, which gives the viewer the sense that the round ball in the middle is very much alone while surrounded by people.

Paper was the main ingredient in this piece. I used water and some glue to help the pieces stick together. In the process of making them, I let the paper mostly disintegrate in water and then I formed semi-neat cubes with them.

I sketched out a few ideas before this one. I thought of doing a paper sculpture of glasses with a tear coming off of them, but that wasn't as experimentational as I wanted. So after brainstorming my word a bit more, I went along with the idea of cubes that go from large to small, and finally transform into a sphere. This worked out as I wanted, though I do think I could have spent more time on the neatness and preciseness of the cubes, which would have added to the understanding of being alone.
