Reflection

The prompt for Beets was to create a piece using a 4 x 5 grid of circles. As can be seen in my final piece, I have many circles, just not in a grid. I had them in a grid to start with, but I wanted to see what they would look like standing on their own so I cut them out. While this doesn't go with the prompt perfectly, I still decided to see what I could do that would remeble the prompt even if I had chosen to cut them out. The idea was experimentation of materials. I used many different materials and while some worked and others didn't, it was good to learn more about this. The title is what my good friend told me it reminded her of when I showed her. She said it looked like different fruits and vegetables. So Beets it was.

The materials I used were colored pencil on charcoal paper, which was glued onto poster board. Also I used white charcoal, sharpie markers, sharpies, India ink, and felt tipped markers. It is all on blue poster board, which was stiff enough to support the glue and not bend too much.

There was quite a bit of revision in the making of this piece. I started on green charcoal

paper, but after sketching out an idea, and beginning to draw, I decided to start over. Then I began on a smaller piece of blue charcoal paper, which I got about 1/3 finished with before I made the decision to cut the circles out. This was cool because I got to play with negative space circles. There was a lot of arranging and changing of the layout of the circles, but eventually I gave up and tried to just add color. Overall this piece was just about experimentation in color.
