Reflection

Water Woman was made as the first in an investigation about the relationship between the natural world, and the feminine/female body. In this sculpture, I am exploring the curves of a more feminine body, and how those curves mimic those found in nature. In the process of creating her, I fell into the idea of what a woman "should" look like a little bit while making this piece, which makes sense given the nature of the piece. Meaning that because I am creating about nature and the feminine body it is natural for some of those conflicts to come up in the artist about this division and separation of the body and nature.

The materials I used were clay and sea green glaze. I choose green specifically because it had a water-like quality to the color of it, which I like. Clay was chosen because it does originate from the earth, which is important when I'm creating a sculpture that relates to the earth. I really liked learning about working with 10G clay and how it works just a bit differently from clay I have used before.

In practice for this piece, I did quite a bit of sketching out the form. During the process of making her, I got feedback that helped me greatly with making her proportions more realistic. I wanted her to have a larger more noticeable belly, which I hadn't made yet. My process was mostly sketching, building up the piece, and glazing/firing. I plan to add flowers out of sculpting clay around some of the pieces I want to highlight on her. I am torn here because I like the form as it is, but I may take the risk because there is more she could become.
