Artist's Statement
When I started creating the hallway summative piece, I was tasked with creating a piece that had the correct perspective of the hallway at Freeport High School. Then I wanted to make it my own and add some creative designs. The main story behind the work is that I first created the perspective of how it was meant to look, and then I added the swirling patterns. The swirling patterns come from the doodles that I used to love to do almost anywhere. I would draw doodles on every scrap piece of paper I can find most of them just left like the same swirls that are found in this hallway perspective piece. They also reminded me of vines creeping yet dancing in the jungle. That is why I titled the piece “I find the jungle even in its subtleties.”
For all of my perspective drawings, I have used graphite pencil. I usually start with a light pencil such as a 2H or an HB. These work best because they are very light and they do not smudge. This is very good because I have to erase many times at the beginning of the perspective drawings. Once I get my entire drawing sketched out and I know the placement of everything, I will go over it in something darker starting at a B pencil and working its way up to a 6/8B depending on the area. For areas that I want darker, I will use a 6B pencil or 4B pencil and for areas that I want to keep a little bit light, I will just use a B pencil.
I started this project by making a vanishing point and then a square somewhere around that. I drew my lines outward from there until I got what looks like a hallway. I started to add things like the floorboards/tiles in the ceiling tiles. Then I added the hallway and the door. Next, I went to the pieces of art hanging on the walls. I was not able to complete every one of them because there were so many but I did my best to show as many as I could. Once I was done with that part of the drawing, I went over things in a darker pencil. Finally, I got to add the swirling designs. These added the movement that I wanted, because it's so far it had just been straight lines. This actually would balance out the piece even though that's not something I knew at the time. If I were to continue to work on this I would add more direction to the vines /spirals and maybe make it so they have a destination.
