Artist Statement
Lips is a relief based on skin color and shape. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do for a relief, and while I am not certain this still counts, it was defitaley good for experimentation. The main idea is exploring the natural folds of skin and specifically lips and the nose. As well as exploring pigmentaion, and now skin colors can blend into one another, or contrast well.
I used only sculpty for this project. At first I has some aluminum on the back of the piece which si what caused the little lines on the surface (I flipped it over so that side is what is now facing the viewer).
As said above, experimentation was very important for this project. I made a few smaller versions of this using single color before the larger one. It was in this process that I got the idea for different skin colors, and started making different tones using a pink and a brown clay. Together I could get roughly the colors I wanted, however I do want to figure out a better way to get very dark browns, and very light pinks. As seen in the picture to the far left, I tried making an aluminum mold of my face which didn't work. I also made the start to a mountain scene, and three pairs of lips. The small scale versions were very helpful for learning how to manipulate the sculpty to move how you want.
