Works leading up to my final project ~ experiments
Artist Statement
The main idea behind all of these pieces was to learn to work in a new medium. I haven't ever worked with paper as much as I have done on this end of the previous project, which is partly why there's so much experimentation that needed to happen. In my final piece, the main focus is making a flipbook that causes one to slow down and really look at the images on the pages. To help in this transition of slowing down, there is a water droplet that is seen moving throughout the page as one flips through the book.
The materials I used for the final project are an art history textbook, an Exacto knife, and a blue marker.
In this project specifically, the transition from 2D design to 3D design was very clear. I started out making a 2D piece after being inspired by a photographer named Joanne Arnold who photographs homeless people living in Portland Maine. Her images inspired me to make a print called "Miriam."I struggled with turning this into a 3D work which is how the pieces that involved an eye were made. I then tried to experiment with making a whole project in which you are seeing the world through someone else's eye, bringing the metaphor to life. However after this didn't really work, I was inspired by maps and the natural topography, so I started cutting out essentially a river on a map. Still feeling lost in what to make, I got this idea to cut paper out of a book so I just started cutting it away. I wasn't quite sure what I was going to make from the book at first but as I got started an idea developed and that's what I settled on.
