Reflection
Experimenting was at the heart of this project. Octopus of the Sun and the Moon was created using a technique called stippling that was new to me. It was for this reason that I chose to do this. I wanted to break out of my comfort zone a little, which I did. The design is more the result of experimentation than anything planned. After a while of working on the project, I started to see the figure of a crescent moon emerge. Once I saw this, it seemed like it would fit together really well if I added the sun. They ended up fitting together well, and I am proud of this piece because of the dedication required to make it come together.
I used a 0.8mm felt-tipped black pen, many 0.3mm felt-tipped colored pens, colored pencils, and metallic sharpies. The piece is on a circular piece of watercolor paper. I chose this because of the fascinating texture it created.
My original project was much different from my finished project. Starting off, I had ideas about drawing/sketching the outline and shadows of pregnant women on a black piece of paper. Her belly was going to be the full moon. Because the project needed to have circles in it, I kept the circles that I was going to use for the moon, and I turned them into something else. I painted three circles on this watercolor paper that I never ended up using in my final project. What started as an experiment turned into a new technique I can use.
