For this piece, I decided to take a very literal approach to the prompt, “create an animal with a dog head, bunny ears, and a kangaroo body.” Though there was a lot of opportunity for creativity, I chose to experiment specifically with lines, colors, form, and proportion. I wanted to use green and pink to emulate something living, but also something with very funky, almost artificial undertones. I also wanted the cheeriness of the colors to contrast with the unsettling nature of the picture. I’m really happy with the result, I think it’s a little different than my usual work and I’m glad I played around!

I used fine-point pens for the entire piece, focusing on creating texture through detailed linework. The background is subtle but busy, and the animal’s form is shaded and highlighted with various pinkish colors.

I sketched quite a bit before beginning my final work. I wasn’t really sure how to fill my page, because I wanted the main focus to be the animal, not the background. In the end, I ended up throwing proportion away and creating a kind of warped, trippy image that I’m really happy with and I think effectively engages the page. The texture in the background is another thing I played around with. I didn't want it to distract, but I didn't want it to be boring. A monochrome motif seemed like the way to go, and I’m proud of the result!
